The Civil War is also known as the war between the states. The reason why is because 11 states seceed from the U.S. and fought the remaining states so could have their own country called the Confderate States of America.
President Abarham Linclon called for 75,000 3 month voulunteers,while the new president of the Conferderacy,Jefferson Davis,called for 100,000 3 month volunteers. Eager men sind up rapidly, hoping for adventure and glory.
Two major armies collided at what would be the first major battle in the war:the battle of Manasses, also known as the battle of Bull Run.The Union army was commanend by Major General Ivrin McDowell,while the Confederate army had two commanders:General Pierre Beauregard commaned the majority of the army. His co-general was General Joseph Johnston who had reinforcements with him. The Union forced the conferdates to retreat and almost won the battle, but Thomas Jackson's brigade came in where they stood"like a stone wall" which got him the nickname "Stonewall" Jackson. When the Union came into Jackson's brigade, they reatred in panic all the way to Washington. It was a decivese victory for the south, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was the hero of the south.
